We support these bills:
House
Bill 1074 - Woman's Right To Know Act Of 2001 by Representative Jim Magnus (R-Dist.
55) signed into law
by Governor Mike Huckabee February 21, 2001.
This bill requires that
women seeking abortions receive information about medical risks
associated with abortion and be offered information concerning
fetal development and alternatives to abortion, at least a day
before an abortion can be performed.
House
Bill 1070 - The Safe Haven Act by Representative Gene Jeffress (D-Dist. 38) signed into law by Governor Huckabee
February 13, 2001.
This bill provides anonymity and immunity from prosecution for
women who leave their unwanted newborns at a hospital or other
public place instead of dumping or otherwise harming
the child.
House
Bill 1079 - Regulating the Prescribing of RU-486 by Representative Jeremy Hutchinson (R-Dist.
53) House Public Health
Committee action pending.
This bill will require that physicians meet certain requirements
before prescribing the abortion pill, RU-486 to women seeking
abortion.
House
Bill 1132 - Viable Fetus Act by
Representative Chaney Taylor (R-Dist. 41) Senate action pending
This bill will amend the Arkansas Code 16-62-102(a) to include
viable fetus in the definition of person for wrongful death actions.
We oppose this bill:
House
Bill 1057 - Requiring Birth Certificates To Be Opened for Adoptees
at age 21 by Representative
Sandra Rodgers (D-Dist. 28)
Failed to pass out of the House Public Health Committee on January
5th but may be reconsidered in March.
This bill will allow people who are adopted in Arkansas to receive
a copy of their original birth certificate at age 21. The wishes
of women who seek privacy when placing a child for adoption will
be completely ignored and may cause women to choose abortion
instead of adoption in a crisis pregnancy situation. This bill
would also be retroactive so that the identities of past birth
mothers who were promised privacy would be revealed.
